Objective: Work with MVS (OS/390, z/OS) on IBM or compatible mainframe equipment, including, but not limited to: installation, maintenance, customization, modification, software development, training, and consulting. Based in the Silicon Valley area, willing to travel.
Over 35 years of IBM compatible mainframe experience from the original S/360 TOS and DOS Operating Systems to the current releases of OS/390 and z/OS. During most of this time attended GUIDE (until 1998), then SHARE. Was active in the GUIDE MVS Group including running Task Forces and as Project Manager. Have given Presentations at both GUIDE and SHARE.
Major focus of recent activities:
Installation and maintenance of OS/390 and z/OS using both SMP/E and PDO and ServerPak.
Installation and maintenance of various ISV products.
Customization and modification of both IBM and ISV code.
System organization, such as volume organization, naming conventions, catalog structure, Master Catalog maintenance, TSO and ISPF customization.
Building and maintaining both basic and parallel Sysplexes.
Problem analysis and debugging using standard tools, such as IPCS.
I/O configuration using HCD.
Multiple trips to Beijing to assist a major bank in constructing an MVS environment in a new Data Center.
Use of a Flex-ES based System for software development.
I have a broad expanse of knowledge on building, customizing, and maintaining MVS and related Subsystems, excluding Data Base products. I am highly fluent in S/390 Assembler Language, very experienced with REXX, and am comfortable with PL/I. I have dealt extensively with ACF2 and moderately with RACF, using SAF to build code that is Security System neutral.
System modification techniques I utilize (using SMP/E whenever possible) include both sanctioned (vendor documented) and unsanctioned modifications utilizing Superzaps, Source updates, replacements and additions, front ends to vendor code, exit stubs, control block intercepts, dynamic LPA, Subsystem Interface, SVCs, etc.
System integrity is a key attribute of the techniques I employ to build, modify, and maintain MVS. Using standard interfaces and maintaining compatibility across system levels is paramount to any customization.
